Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for shore side mooring operations
   • Access, interpret and apply shore side mooring operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Receive, interpret and clarify and confirm details of mooring operations tasks to be performed by the mooring crew
   • Select and wear personal correct protective equipment
   • Identify, address and report potential hazards to personnel, infrastructure, vessel and the environment
   • Ensure that all associated equipment is available and in allocated position ready for securing ship
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Berth vessel
   • Communicate clearly and in a timely manner with personnel using approved communication methods
   • Receive instructions from shipping officer and carry out procedure for securing the vessel
   • Ensure that all safety procedures and practices are followed
3. Release vessel
   • Communicate clearly and in a timely manner with personnel using approved communication methods
   • Receive instructions from shipping officer for sequence of ships lines to be released
   • Release ships lines
   • Ensure that all safety precautions and procedures are followed

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete shore side mooring operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating to confirm work requirements

demonstrates completion of shore side mooring operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

operating equipment, electric capstan winches, safety hooks & quick release hooks

completing berthing vessel operations on 3 separate occasions in different conditions

completing releasing vessel operations on 3 separate occasions in different conditions

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in conducting shore side mooring operations through:

isolation devices — type and purpose

accessing, interpreting and applying technical information

accurate record keeping

plant status

equipment associated with mooring operations

relevant operational and maintenance procedures and associated documentation
